The Tourism Research Centre (TRC), housed in the School of Business Administration on the UPEI campus, is an independent body providing timely, accurate and professional research on the tourism industry. From May to August 2014 with the potential for part-time work in September, the TRC requires three vibrant individuals who will, under the supervision of the Research Manager, serve as Research Assistants.
The Research Assistant will be primarily involved in field work approaching people and asking them to participate in an online survey. This will include: collecting email addresses from visitors to PEI, entering collected information into spreadsheets or web-based forms, monitoring the survey completion rate, and responding to enquiries from outside parties.
This position also has an office component which will include monitoring tourism trends, writing literature reviews, and researching travel and tourism related topics such as landscape, golf, branding, etc.  Additional research opportunities will be identified based on clients’ needs.
For field work, the successful candidate must be: extremely comfortable interacting with others and approaching strangers, reliable, able to work independently, and have strong verbal communication skills. Conversational French would be an asset and a research background is preferred.
The students will be expected to provide his or her own transportation. This position will require some evening and weekend work.


• Field work collecting data, circulating surveys, and collecting contact information.
• Data entry.
• Testing online surveys.
• Providing feedback for paper-based and online surveys.
• Conducting secondary research, primarily using the Internet, online databases, and journals.
• Completing reviews of academic literature in specific areas of interest.
• Working with TRC personnel to plan the ongoing work of the TRC.
• Responding to enquiries from outside parties.
• Other activities as requested by the Research Manager or Faculty Director of the TRC.


• Comfortable working with the public and approaching strangers (for survey work).
• Extremely accurate data entry using an online web form.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite of software (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
• Strong organizational skills.
• Self starter with the ability to work with minimal supervision.
• Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
• Ability to work with others in a cooperative and collaborative manner.
• Evidence of research abilities in tourism (or related field).
• Knowledge of the tourism industry in PEI would be an asset.
• Access to a vehicle.
• Conversational French would be an asset.
