The University of Prince Edward Island is looking for the right candidate to take on an exciting new permanent position as “Manager Industry Research” in the School of Sustainable Design Engineering. Reporting to the Director of Industry Research, the successful candidate will work closely with researchers in the four Research Centres of Excellence: Robotics and Industrial Automation; Bio and Food Processing; Sustainable and Alternative Energy; and the new Centre in Aerospace and Advanced Manufacturing.

The Manager of Industry Research will be directly responsible for all technical staff in the Centres including research engineers, technologists, and co-op students. Managerial duties include day-to-day supervision of Centre staff, hiring, and conducting performance reviews. The successful candidate will be responsible for the general operations and management of the centres and supervise the installation, commissioning, operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of manufacturing, material handling and testing equipment by Centre staff. This individual will also provide guidance and direction in the selection of all equipment and will oversee an equipment monitoring program.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Facilitate the day-to-day operations and scheduling of research projects, experiments/testing using the equipment
• Manage, oversee and participate in the installation, commissioning and safe operation of complex industrial equipment, including data collection, recording, analysis, and report preparation and presentation
• Work with research personnel and clients on industry-related projects
• Manage human resource requirements for technologists, research engineers, co-op students, clients and other research personnel, including adherence to the safe operation of industrial research equipment
• Facilitate and oversee the maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting and repair of equipment
• Oversight of the daily operation and management of the Centres of Excellence, including ordering supplies and maintaining an up-to-date inventory of supplies
• In cooperation with the Director of Industry Research, participate in the creation, management and oversight of the annual budget

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor of Engineering or equivalent in a relevant engineering field
• Registration as a Professional Engineer in PEI
• Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience
• Demonstrated experience in staff leadership and supervision
• Knowledge of and experience with industrial equipment and operations related to robotics, food processing, sustainable energy or advanced manufacturing in an industrial research and development environment
• Experience organizing and managing industrial research activities, projects and schedules
• Demonstrated creative, communication, problem solving and organizational skills
• Ability to multi-task, coordinate projects and function professionally in a high-pressure, deadline-oriented environment
• Excellent computer skills
