The University of Prince Edward Island is looking for the right candidate to take on an exciting new permanent position of “Laboratory Technician” in the School of Sustainable Design Engineering and the Department of Physics. Reporting to both the Director of Student Experience in the School and the Chair of the Department of Physics, this individual would be responsible for the design, setup, instruction, supervision and coordination related to the laboratory components of engineering science and physics courses, and responsible for the maintenance, operation and training related to the telescopes in the Department of Physics. This individual would interact with students, academic staff and other technical and administrative staff on a daily basis.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Design and setup of laboratory experiments for engineering science and physics courses.
• Provide instruction, design and prepare course material, and assist in the preparation and grading of work related to the laboratory components of engineering science and physics courses.
• Tutor and counsel students with experimental procedures and practices, data collection and preparation of lab reports.
• Train and supervise students using lab equipment, computers and facilities.
• Maintain a safe working environment.
• Maintain, repair and calibrate equipment.
• Keep an up-to-date inventory of all equipment, materials and supplies.
• Maintain, operate and train in relation to the telescopes in the Department of Physics.
• Coordinate and participate in K-12 outreach activities including school visits, engineering/physics camps, science fairs, Scopes for Schools initiative, and monthly telescope viewings.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Masters of Science degree in either Physics or Engineering.
• Minimum 1 year of relevant work experience.
• Excellent communication and problem solving skills.
• Experience in a laboratory environment.
• Demonstrated creative, communication, and organizational skills.
• Ability to multi-task, coordinate projects and function professionally in a high-pressure, deadline-oriented environment.
• Excellent computer skills.
