Utility Worker - Full-Time Permanent Position
Hours of Work: 

37.5 hours per week 
Tuesday to Friday 1:00pm – 9:00pm
Saturday 8:00am – 4:00pm

$41,757 per annum as per IBEW 1928

The Facilities Management Department at the University of Prince Edward Island is seeking applicants for a full-time Utility Worker. This position involves a broad range of physical services related to buildings/equipment/furnishings/grounds on all University owner assets.


• Ensure that the University grounds are maintained in a safe and aesthetically attractive condition
• Provide support services in the movement of materials, furniture, and equipment
• Provide support services for building systems not requiring a skilled trade or under the direction of a Maintenance Repairman or Electrician
• Movement of snow and salt/sand for roadways, parking lots, sidewalks, building entrances, fire hydrants or other areas identified by direct supervisor on campus or other property maintained by UPEI
• Dismantling, assembly and movement of furniture
• Set up and tear down for events
• Ground maintenance and landscaping which would include but not be limited to grass cutting, aerating, raking, seeding, fertilizing, ground, fence or hard surface repair, etc.
• General maintenance within buildings not requiring a skilled trade or under the direction of a Maintenance Repair coworker.  This would include operation of equipment to carry out assignments.  For greater clarity this includes the use of basic hand and power tools
• Movement of materials and equipment on and off campus
• Collection and disposal of waste from buildings maintained by UPEI along with maintenance of the equipment used for these tasks
• Inspection and general maintenance of equipment and tools being used to perform duties
• Quality inspections of rooms and safety equipment
• Such other related duties as assigned by the Supervisor and may be reasonably considered as coming within the duties of this class


• Successful completion of Grade 12
• Experienced in the operation and care of various machinery e.g. snowplows, skid steer, tractor, snow blower, zero turn lawn cutting tractors, etc.
• General Maintenance or construction experience
• Valid driver’s license (License to operate heavy equipment an asset) and a criminal record check.
• Experience with heavy motor repair considered an asset
• 1-3 years related experience
