Through its unique project-based, hands-on, industry-linked program model, the UPEI School of Sustainable Design Engineering takes learning and collaboration to a new level by removing traditional barriers to learning and enabling true, real world solutions.  

The Associate Dean is the administrative head of the UPEI School of Sustainable Design Engineering. Under the leadership of this position, the School is organized into three divisions: Student Experience, Industry Partnerships, and Industrial Research. Each division is led by a Director who reports directly to the Associate Dean. Together, the Associate Dean and the three Directors form the School’s management group.

The Director of Industry Research oversees all operations of the Schools’ four Centres of Excellence.  Each Centre has dedicated research staff and technical support.  Research conducted in the Centres is largely applied research related to the focus areas of the School and aligned with interests of our strategic Industrial research partners.


The UPEI School of Sustainable Design Engineering is founded on innovation and collaboration. The Director of Industry Research plays a key role in building this culture as a champion for promoting and facilitating leading edge collaborative, interdisciplinary and applied research.

More specifically, the responsibilities of the Director of Industry Research, as delegated by the Associate Dean, include:

• Building and fostering a community of innovative researchers and technical staff
• Developing collaborative research networks between our research centres and other public and private research facilities both nationally and internationally
• Assist the Director of Industry Partnerships in promoting the capabilities and benefits of the Centres to industry
• Develop strong linkages with other UPEI Faculties and Departments
• Support undergraduate and graduate student research with space and equipment
• Transfer knowledge to the business community through outreach activities
• Develop and implement a strategic plan for technology development and commercialization of intellectual property
• Develop  policies, processes and procedures for applied research
• Oversee all administrative requirements of the Centres including supervising personnel, financial management and operations
• Report to the Associate Dean on the research activities of the Centres
• Manage the space needs of the research Centres and associated projects
• Approve projects to be accepted into the Centres
• Identify capital equipment and operating fund needs, as well as potential funding sources
• Advise the faculty on the process and requirements for research funding, NSERC, NRC IRAP etc.


Minimum qualifications include a PhD in engineering or a closely related field with five years of experience in public/private partnerships and research grant collaborations in an academic or engineering R&D environment. Additional credentials such as an MBA would be a definite asset.

The successful candidate must have the following skills:

• Significant administrative and academic governance experience
• Exceptional interpersonal skills necessary to ensure collaborative relationships and outcomes with faculty, staff, administrators, and industry partners
• Experience with peer review of grants and contracts
• Evidence of experience with undergraduate/master’s student research and training programs
• Demonstrated commitment to working successfully with a diverse faculty, staff, and student population
• A strong team player with the ability to work  in a highly effective, cooperative and collaborative manner within a dynamic and fast-paced environment
