The Veterinary Teaching Hospital requires an Animal Health Technician to work as a floater in the SA hospital. Primary responsibilities will be in Small Animal Anesthesia, Small Animal Surgery, Small Animal ICU, and Small Animal Medicine; however, support may be required in Community Practice, Cardiology, Dermatology, Dispensary, and the Large Animal Hospital.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Attending rounds
• Working with technicians and clinicians in the small animal hospital to anticipate, organize, and prioritize cases that need to be assisted with throughout the day
• Completing treatment orders for patients in the ICU and small animal wards
• Providing clinical anesthesia support (in both small and large animal services)
• Administering chemotherapy and other specialty procedures/treatments (scopes, blood transfusions, etc.)
• Providing support to the cardiology service
• Providing support to the community practice service
• Providing support to the dermatology service
• Providing support to locum services
• Monitoring and reporting to the clinician any abnormalities in animals in relation to the treatments and/or monitoring of animals
• Stocking and maintaining supplies in various locations
• Maintaining biosecurity standards
• Covering lunches, sickness, vacation for other technicians in various areas within the SA hospital
• Updating patient billing
• Assist in the maintenance of medical records
• Able to perform necessary nursing skills for the various levels of care required,
• Support veterinary students, technician students, and junior veterinarians participating in post-graduate programs with confidence and compassion
• Work in a position of flux and change that may revolve around and through many services within the small animal hospital
• Back up support to the large animal hospital when the small animal hospital is quiet
• Other related duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Must be a graduate of an Animal Health Technician program from a recognized facility
• RVT designation is preferred
• Three (3) plus years of experience working in a clinical setting with small animals
• One (1) plus years of experience working in a clinical setting with large animals, or a related experience that provides competency and comfort in the handling of large animals (equine primarily)
• Demonstrated ability to perform necessary nursing skills for the various levels of care required
• Demonstrated interpersonal skills, excellent oral and written communication skills
• Demonstrated reliability and self-motivation
• Demonstrated skills in multi-tasking, time-management, and adaptability
• Demonstrated ability to work well on a team
• Preference given to individuals with experience in specialty referral or academic practice

Preference given to applicants with demonstrated experience in veterinary anaesthesia support, specialty small animal internal medicine support, and/or specialty small animal surgery support.
