The Climate Research Lab is seeking a lead researcher to assist with a new project which aims to provide capacity for the development of new knowledge to inform farming practices from both technological and ecological standpoints to reduce environmental impacts, enhance production yields, and support long-term sustainability. This capacity will allow for the acquisition of knowledge to equip those on the front lines of farming and environmental stewardship with the best strategies for maximizing crop production in a changing climate.

The successful applicant will be responsible for all geospatial technological components of this research project. The applicant will lead the UAV requirements and be responsible for the supervision of a UAV technician. Continued work is based on satisfactory performance and funding availability.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Spec high end UAV systems, software, processing computers, and geospatial field equipment
• Liaison for the purchase of UAV and geospatial equipment and software for major project
• Receive and test equipment
• Receive UAV specific and software training when applicable
• Lead UAV missions related to ongoing projects
• Process and analyze UAV data
• Obtain appropriate permission from Transport Canada for UAV operation
• Maintain fleet of UAVs
• Develop research plans with industry stakeholders
• Assist in funding proposals and project design
• Conduct literature reviews
• Expectation to submit peer reviewed journal articles when applicable
• Mentor graduate students

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Master’s Degree required
• Candidate must have significant experience flying UAVs including fixed wing and multirotor
• Extensive experience and knowledge of UAV best practices including data processing
• Recognized experience by Transport Canada as a UAV pilot-in-command and operations manager
• Expected to have a background in geospatial science
• Knowledge of RTK GPS concepts and operation
• Experience using a variety of software suites including; ArcGIS, Pix4D, Unity, Photoshop, Mission Planner, Drone Deploy, Flight Planner, Pix4D, Agisoft Photoscan
• Experience collecting and post processing GPS data
• Civil and Commercial UAS Training Course Certified
• ROC-A certified
• Programming experience
• Wide knowledge of environmental impacts caused by climate change
• Experience managing large spatial datasets
• Excellent writing and communication skills
• Must be able to work as part of and team and independently and necessary
• Must be self-motivated
