The Faculty of Education is seeking a dynamic and multi-skilled individual to fill a full-time permanent position as the International Student Academic Coach.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Reporting to the Global Perspectives Academic Lead, the Coordinator of Graduate Studies, and the Dean, the successful candidate will be responsible for providing support related to the academic success of international students within the Faculty of Education.  This includes:

• Implement outreach activities as needed in cooperation with university personnel
• Work one-on-one with students to identify student needs and support them to understand assignment expectations, organize and/or edit assignments, revise & practice presentations, and develop skills that will improve academic performance
• Organize and facilitate academic workshops and groups sessions, including MEd academic orientation, workshops, tutorials, etc.
• Develop relationships with community organizations
• Maintain close communications and information sharing between the Faculty of Education and the International Centre for English Academic Programs, university personnel, Student Services, and the International Relations Office and English Academic Program at UPEI
• Create tools and resources to support second language learners
• Assist students to ensure they are complying with UPEI academic guidelines and policies
• Provide training and in-service for faculty and staff to address the special needs of international students
• Work with the Faculty and other University departments, institutions and stakeholders on initiatives related to international students, academic success, and/or EAL pedagogy
• Assist with special projects that contribute to the student academic achievement
• Conduct surveys, collect data and prepare and present reports related to international students in the Faculty
• Plan, implement and participate in events and activities which will enhance the cultural understanding and language skills of international students
• Play an active role in the development of internationalization of the Faculty’s work, through service on the committees, etc.
• Guide students regarding any of their general queries to the relevant university services on a day to day basis
• Other duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Master’s Degree in Education, with significant experience in academic writing
• BEd would be considered an asset
• Certification in Teaching English as an Additional Language or equivalent is required
• At least three years’ experience teaching, coaching, or in a leadership role in an EAL environment is required
• Experience in curriculum development for EAP programs is an asset
• Experience with International students or in a multicultural environment
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• A valid driver’s license is required
