The School of Sustainable Design Engineering (SSDE) at UPEI is a unique engineering education program organized in the context of an innovation focused research and development consulting firm.  Faculty and staff act as senior engineers, consults and mentors to project groups comprised of students working on real world problems for community based and industrial clients.   Within the School is Fab Lab Atlantic (FLA), a dedicated fee for service unit affiliated with the international Fab Lab movement.  In addition, it provides prototype design and fabrication support primarily targeted at inventors, entrepreneurs and the small business (SMB) community within our region.

The Opportunity
The School is currently seeking a well-rounded and energetic self-starter for the position of Student Product Design Engineer (SPDE).  Working within the Industry Partnership group and under the direction of the Director of Industry Partnerships and/or the Industry Partnership Engineers, the SSDE will provide prototype design and fabrication support services to casual users and business clients of the Fab Lab Atlantic. The Student Product Design Engineer will also take direction from and support the Fab Lab Design Technician in ALL technical and operational activities occurring within the Fab Lab Atlantic.


• Communicate with customers of the Fab Lab to assist in the establishment of performance goals, project requirements, functional requirement and design alternatives
• Provide support (as required) to clients in the development of prototypes including (when requested), ideation, design suggestions, CAD support, material selection, component sourcing, fabrication and assembly
• Assist with the design of experiments for testing and verification of new products and coordinate testing of prototypes
• Prepare customized reports, analyses, CAD models, technical bulletins and presentations for clients of the Fab Lab
• Assist engineering and technical staff in field-testing at client locations and participate in product development meeting with clients
• Research current state of technologies and work with Three Oaks Innovation in patent searches and other intellectual property considerations
• Assist in the development, troubleshooting and/or enhancement of existing products to assess and improve performance and client satisfaction
• Assist Fab Lab Technician in all aspects of Lab operations including reception, supervision, workshop development/delivery, technical assistance, project definition, quotation, design services, equipment training and support, equipment maintenance and inventory control


The ideal candidate for this position will have the following qualifications and personal characteristics:
• As a minimum, the successful candidate must have completed the first two years of the Sustainable Design Engineering degree or deemed equivalent
• Should have a grade of 75% or greater in Engn 222 or deemed equivalent
• Demonstrated interest and capability in Solid Works and/or Autodesk Inventor and a willingness to learn other CAD/CAM programs
• Proficient in MS Office programs and an ability to create professional spreadsheets and presentations
• Willingness to master operations and maintenance of Fab Lab fabrication software and fabrication equipment
• Experience in a service oriented customer focused business environment would be an asset
