The University of Prince Edward Island is looking for the right candidate to take on an exciting new position as “Industry Research Assistant” in the School of Sustainable Design Engineering. Reporting to the Manager of Industry Research, the successful candidate will work closely with researchers in the Research Centres of Excellence, including: Robotics and Industrial Automation; Bioresources and Food Processing; Sustainable Energy; and Sensors, Optics, and Imaging. The successful candidate will be involved in the installation, commissioning, operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of manufacturing, material-handling and testing equipment in the centres. This individual would interact with students, academic staff and other technical and administrative staff on a daily basis.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Working with research personnel and clients on industry-related projects
• Installation, commissioning and safe operation of complex industrial equipment, including data collection, recording, analysis, and report preparation and presentation
• Performing maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting and repair of equipment
• Conducting instrumentation installation and data collection for industry-related research projects
• Adhering to the safe operation of industrial research equipment
• Maintaining a safe working environment
• Provision of technical advice and support to other technicians and activities associated with the Centres of Excellence

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Two-year community college diploma in a relevant area such as environmental applied science technology (or equivalent)
• Minimum 2 years of relevant work experience
• Knowledge of and experience in the collection of samples (water, soil, etc.) for environmental analysis would be considered an asset
• Knowledge of and experience in food processing (food chemistry, food and materials physics) would be considered an asset
• Knowledge of and experience in bioresource engineering (industrial application of chemical, thermal, and biological systems for the conversion of conventional agricultural products to biofuels, platform chemicals, and other value-added commodities) would be considered an asset
• Excellent communication and problem solving skills
• Experience in a laboratory environment would be considered an asset
• Ability to multi-task, coordinate projects and function professionally in a high-pressure, deadline-oriented environment
