The Comprehensive School Health Research (CSHR) Group (under the direction of Dr. Donna Murnaghan – School of Nursing) at the University of Prince Edward Island invites applications from students interested in working on a project assessing the health behaviours of PEI students. The School Health Action Planning and Evaluation System – Prince Edward Island (SHAPES-PEI) is a classroom-based survey that is administered to all grade 5-12 students in PEI. The survey assesses a wide range of factors, including physical activity, healthy eating, mental fitness, and tobacco/drug use.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The successful applicants will assist with all aspects of implementing the 2012-13 SHAPES-PEI project. This includes assisting with preparation for school data collections (entering permission information into an online database, preparing and bundling forms and questionnaires, sending materials to schools, etc.), traveling to schools to collect data, and assisting with the implementation of procedures on data collection days (resolving problems as they arise and communicating all concerns to the Project Coordinator). Applicants may be required to perform other duties related to the research interests of the CSHR Group, such as literature reviews, utilizing reference management software, and general office duties (filing, faxing, photocopying, etc).
QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants must be working toward a University Degree, or equivalent, in nursing, health promotion, social sciences, or education. Applicants should have an understanding of the basic principles of conducting social science research. Effective oral and written communication skills, as well as excellent time management, organization, and attention to detail are essential. The ability to work independently and follow detailed protocols with minimal supervision is also required. Familiarity with the areas of tobacco control and adolescent health behaviour, experience in conducting quantitative research and collecting data, experience working within the school system, French language skills and access to a vehicle are assets. A flexible working schedule is preferred.
