18.75 hours per week

$57,531 to $63,266 per annum, prorated to time and term as per CUPE 1870

The AVC Diagnostic Services (AVC DS) is seeking application from qualified candidates to fill two (2) Virology Technologist Positions in the Regional Diagnostic Virology Services. The individuals will work as part of a team in RDVS in performing the development and validation work of multiplex molecular diagnostic testing targeting the economically important viruses of farmed animals.


• Provide support and  participate in the development and validation of the multiplex molecular diagnostic tests targeting the economically important viruses of farmed animals
• Perform molecular diagnostic techniques such PCR, RT-PCR, nested PCR and multiplex molecular assays utilizing fluidic bead-based technologies
• Establish and maintain the nucleic acid databases of viruses targeted by the multiplex assays 
• Participate in the performance of traditional diagnostic techniques routinely used in a diagnostic virology laboratory such as virus isolation,  ELISA,  fluorescent antibody tests, preparation of samples for negative staining EM
• Perform tasks related to infectious virus and molecular diagnostic work such as aliquoting of viruses, primers and other reagent, recording and storage of viruses and specimens
• Documentation of procedures and results of experiments and other tasks related to the development and application of the multiplex molecular diagnostic assays. 


• The successful candidate must hold a Bachelor of Science degree or a Medical Laboratory Technologist certification
• Experience in any of the following related disciplines:  microbiology, biochemistry, immunology, virology or molecular biology.
• Experience and knowledge in molecular diagnostic testing and traditional diagnostic virology testing
• Minimum 2 years of experience working in a veterinary diagnostic microbiology laboratory
• The individual must be able to work and problem solve independently
• Be receptive to changing technologies and accept a multitasking environment
• Ability to work well with others
• A general knowledge of viruses and diagnostic laboratory testing and an in-depth awareness of and hands-on experience in virology techniques, immunodiagnostic techniques, cell culture / aseptic techniques, molecular biology techniques and general laboratory and biocontainment procedures are essential.
• Computer skills including those related to molecular biology such as computer search of available nucleic acid sequences, alignment and analysis etc.
