The Department of Marketing and Communications has an opening for a Communications Officer. The position reports directly to the Associate Director, Marketing and Communications and is responsible for implementing media relations strategy in support of the communication priorities of the University.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Primary responsibilities include:
• Promote the University and its programs through effective development and delivery of key messaging to local, regional, national, and international audiences.
• Serve as the University’s primary point of contact for members of the media and     freelance writers.
• Advise management on a variety of communications matters and issues by conducting daily media scans, proactively identifying and acting on risks and opportunities, preparing editorial content, op-ed pieces.
• Liaise with and nurture relations with media, maintain up-to-date media contact lists, assess media trends, source and pitch story ideas.
• Write, edit, distribute and coordinate marketing and communications materials (publications, web content, advertising, editorial information, news articles, social media messages, and feature stories).
• Write speaking notes and speeches for senior management as required.
• Deliver media training to University management, staff and faculty.
• Participate in committees and working groups such as UPEI Emergency Communications Team in order to achieve media relations and communication objectives.
• Work closely with University event leads and other University communications officers to coordinate media relations and communications strategies.
• Coordinate internal communications initiatives including but not limited to news and event items on upei.ca, Campus Notices and the Campus Connector e-newsletter.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The ideal candidate will have:
• Bachelor’s degree in business administration/commerce, public relations, communications, or a related field.
• 3–5 years directly-related, progressively-responsible experience, preferably in a complex organization with demonstrated success in strategic communications, media relations, and writing.
• Proven experience in using a variety of communications tools, vehicles and platforms to communicate with internal and external audiences, including media.
• Dedication to, and respect for the University, its goals and future.
• Superior written and oral communication skills, including experience with various writing styles (editorial/news, social media, website, promotion materials, advertising).
• Technical competency in Windows/Mac operating systems, MS Office and CMS platforms such as Drupal, Wordpress etc.
• Flexibility, ability to perform well under stress, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and complete projects to deadline.
