Approximately 7.5 hours per week (2 weeks off at Christmas)

$11.27 per hour (vacation pay included)

September 4, 2015 – April 1, 2016 (approximately 28 weeks)

A student research assistant is needed to help coordinate volunteers, collect and analyze data on the topic of Kindergarten language and literacy learning in the context of a school gardening program.  The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Dr. Lyndsay Moffatt in the Faculty of Education and will have the following responsibilities and qualifications.


• Recruiting volunteers
• Working with school staff to implement a school gardening program
• Documenting experiences in the program using audio recorders and photography
• Communicating with volunteers throughout the gardening program
• Designing specific experiences in the gardening program
• Communicating with the Primary Investigator on a regular basis
• Initial coding of data
• Assisting the Primary Investigator with the preparation of a manuscript for publication


• Required to be enrolled as a student at UPEI
• Ability to work independently and perform tasks on short notice
• Familiarity with the Start with a Seedling Intergenerational Gardening and Food Program
• Experience working with volunteers from 15 yrs. – 75 yrs.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Familiarity with concepts of Environmental Education/Education for Environmental Sustainability
• Familiarity with gardening/growing food and food preparation
• Experience working with young children in a school environment
