The Department of Chemistry and Webster Centre for teaching and learning are seeking applications for the position of Student Supported Learning Group (SLG) Leader (also known as Supplemental Instruction Leader). Reporting to the Coordinator of SLG (Treena Smith) and Identified Chemistry Professor (Dr. Jason Pearson).
• Attend all Chemistry 111/112 classes – take notes, do homework, and read all assigned materials including text and supplemental readings.
• Conduct regularly scheduled facilitated supported learning groups / study groups (typically 3 per week determined by team) throughout the term using strategies learned through the SLG training workshops.
• Regularly meet with the SLG Supervisors for debrief sessions.
• Create and discuss SLG Handouts for groups.
• Plan SLG sessions based on the classes for that particular week.
• Implement a wide variety of learning strategies for the SLG sessions – based on training materials / personal knowledge and experience.
• Notify supervisors about potential problems.
• Be able to attend a daylong training session mid-August 2012.
The successful candidate -
• Will be a 3rd year UPEI student (2nd year students will also be considered).
• Must have received credit for chemistry 111 and 112 at UPEI – with 80% or above final mark.
• Content competency in Chemistry 111/112 required.
• Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills required.
• Prior group facilitation skills an asset.
• Be able to work independently.
• Should be familiar with social media for communication amongst peers (or willing to learn).
• Have competencies with computers.
• Strong work ethic and dependable.
