The Faculty of Education at the University of Prince Edward Island has openings for sessional instructors to teach the following courses in summer 2019.

ED-4110-98 LEARNERS AND LEARNING (1 ENGLISH SECTION)

This course explores the growth and development of learners from early childhood to late adolescence. Topics include physical, cognitive, social/emotional and moral/spiritual development; individual differences; learning theories and motivation; behaviour; and the legal, ethical, and counselling responsibilities of teachers.

This is a three semester-hour course offered on campus to students in our Bachelor of Education program, from May 13 to May 27, Monday to Friday, from 1pm to 4pm.

 

ED-4150 THE DIVERSE AND INCLUSIVE CLASSROOM (1 FRENCH SECTION)

This course explores student diversity and addressing the needs of a wide variety of learners within the context of inclusive education. Particular focus will be placed on the development of instructional strategies that support all learners.

This is a three semester-hour course offered on campus in French to students in our Bachelor of Education program on Mondays and Wednesdays from July 12 to August 13 (and also Friday, August 9), from 11:30 to 2:20pm.

 

ED-4200 TEACHING FOR SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATH (STEM)  (1 FRENCH SECTION)

This course introduces students to the pedagogies, practices, and instructional alternatives that foster acquisition of the knowledge, skills, and attitudes critical to success in the sciences, technology, engineering and maths.

This is a three semester-hour course offered on campus in French to students in our Bachelor of Education program on Tuesdays and Thursdays from July 12 to August 13 (and also Friday, July 12), from 8:30am to 11:20am.

 

ED-4230-1  PRIMARY/ELEMENTARY MATHEMATICS I

This course examines the pedagogy of Primary/Elementary Mathematics. Instruction focuses on how children learn mathematics, what it means to engage children in doing mathematics, teaching mathematics through problem solving, and curriculum sequencing. Underlying these foundational ideas for teaching, students will have the opportunity to re-learn key areas of mathematics in a twenty-first century approach to teaching and learning.

This is a three semester-hour course offered on campus to students in the Primary/Elementary stream of our Bachelor of Education program, from May 28 to July 10 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30am to 11:20am.

 

ED-4280-3 PRIMARY/ELEMENTARY MATHEMATICS II (FRENCH)

A continuation of Education 4230, this course further examines and extends the pedagogy of Primary/Elementary focusing on how children conceptualize mathematics and instructional methods required to foster children's numeracy skills.

This is a three semester-hour course offered on campus in French to students in the Primary/Elementary stream of our Bachelor of Education (français langue seconde) program, from July 12 to August 13 on Mondays and Wednesdays  from 2:30pm to 5:20pm (and also Friday, July 12 from 11:30am to 2:20pm). 

 

ED-4450-3 PRIMARY/ELEMENTARY SCIENCE (1 FRENCH SECTION)

The course examines methods of science teaching in the Primary/Elementary grades. Emphasis is placed on practical aspects of organizing and delivering active learning experiences in science, the reading of current literature on method and theory of science, the study of new curricular programs including the integration of science learning with other disciplines, and the relationship between sustainability and science.

This is a three semester-hour course offered on campus in French to students in our Bachelor of Education (français langue seconde) program.  This course is offered to in French from May 28 to July 10, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30am to 11:20am.

 

ED-4540-3 PRIMARY/ELEMENTARY SOCIAL STUDIES (1 FRENCH SECTION)

This course promotes dynamic teaching methods and inclusive approaches to inspire young learners and to elevate the quality of teaching and learning through Social Studies at the Primary/Elementary levels. Grounded in the needs of twenty-first century learners, this course offers concrete ways to create more vibrant, engaging, playful, supportive and inviting environments for this core curriculum area to give all learners dignity and honour their diverse ways of learning.

This is a three semester-hour course offered on campus in French to students in our Bachelor of Education (français langue seconde) program from May 28 to July 10, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30pm to 8:30pm.

 

ED-4560 INTERMEDIATE/SENIOR SOCIAL STUDIES I  (1 FRENCH SECTION)

ED-4630  PERSPECTIVES ON CULTURE AND SOCIETY IN EDUCATION (1 FRENCH SECTION, 1 ENGLISH SECTION)

This course introduces students to the visible and invisible impact of culture and society on education. As students develop an understanding of cultural and social perspectives in education, they examine the roles of schools in the proliferation of social and cultural norms as well as their potential as sites for change.

This is a 2.5 semester-hour course offered on campus to students in our Bachelor of Education program.  Section 98 is offered in English from May 13 to May 23, Monday to Friday, from 9:00am to 12:00pm.  Section 3 is offered in French May 13, 14, 16, 17, 21, 23, 24 & 31, from 4:30pm to 7:20pm. 

 

ED-4640-3 EDUCATING FOR GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP (1 FRENCH SECTION)

This course is intended to broaden pre-service teachers' theoretical and pedagogical perspectives on global citizenship education by gaining an enhanced awareness of a world view that recognizes the interdependence and interconnections of the natural and social worlds. Participants will be introduced to the concept of global citizenship and, from this, develop an understanding of social justice, diversity, socio-cultural responsibility, sustainability, and agency. Demonstrating how to integrate global citizenship into educational practices is a key learning outcome of this course.

This is a 2.5 semester-hour course offered on campus in French to students in our Bachelor of Education (français langue seconde) program from July 12 to August 7, on Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:30am-11:20am.

 

ED-4960 TEACHING PRACTICES I (1 ENGLISH SECTION, 1 FRENCH SECTION)

Through on-campus seminars, and nine weeks of in-school observation and school experience, students will gain in-class experience in organizing and managing a classroom, and planning and teaching effective lessons. They will use strategies developed in coursework to facilitate and assess student learning. Feedback from the mentor teacher and faculty advisor will inform self-assessment and personal and professional growth. Students, using an ePortfolio, will document their personal and professional growth as educators.

This is a six-semester-hour course (three in summer and three in fall) offered to students in our Bachelor of Education program from May 30 to December. This course also includes supervision of student fall practicum from October 23 to December 19.  The dates and schedule of courses varies throughout the year.

 

ED-6110  INTRODUCTION TO RESEARCH METHODS IN EDUCATION (1 SECTION)

In this course, students are introduced to a variety of methods that are appropriate for conducting research in educational settings. Students develop an understanding of qualitative and quantitative research methodologies. Students are introduced to the process of planning, conducting, and reporting research on learning and instruction, and to the critical analysis of current studies reported in educational literature.

This is a three semester-hour course offered on campus to students in the MEd Focus on Inclusive Education (Qualify for PEI Additional Designation) cohort from July 8 to July 12, Monday to Friday, from 8:30am to 4:30pm.

 

ED-6140 THEORIES OF RESEARCH AND LEARNING (1 SECTION)

In this course, students address the role of theory in educational research. The aim is to familiarize graduate students with various theoretical frameworks including theories and principles of learning.

This is a three semester-hour course offered on campus to students in the MEd Focus on Global Perspectives cohort from May 13 to June 20, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:30pm to 4:20pm. 

 

ED-6150 EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP (5 SECTIONS)

In this course, students examine the field of educational leadership. Educational leadership extends beyond the role of the school administrator and focuses upon the development of teachers as leaders who impact on creating effective educational environments. Students research aspects of leadership which impact on schools, and explore models of effective leadership through case studies and simulation.

This is a three semester-hour course: 

• Section 30 is offered on campus to students in our MEd Focus on Community College Educators from July 15 to July 19, Monday to Friday, from 8:30am to 4:30pm. 
• Sections 59 and 69 are offered on-line to students in our MEd  Focus on 21st Century Teaching & Learning (Online) from May 13 to June 20. 
• Section 68 is offered on campus to students in our MEd Focus on Inclusive Education (Qualify for PEI Additional Designation) from July 15 to July 19, Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm. 
• Section 78 is offered online to students in our MEd Focus on Inclusive Education (Qualify for PEI Additional Designation) cohort from May 13 to June 20.

 

ED-6160 ACTION RESEARCH IN EDUCATION (2 SECTIONS)

In this course, students explore ways in which teachers can systematically examine their own classroom practices using action research strategies. Emphasis is placed on issues such as topic selection, methodology, data collection and analysis, and interpretation of results. This process of inquiry is directed towards reflective practice.

This is a three semester-hour course offered on campus to students in the MEd Focus on Global Perspectives cohort from July 2 to August 8, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, from 8:30am to 11:20am.

 

ED-6170  ISSUES IN EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP (1 SECTION)

In this course, students examine current issues in educational leadership. Students research the factors which influence educational leadership such as socio-economic trends, school restructuring, curriculum development, and educational technology.

This is a three semester-hour course offered on campus to students in the MEd Focus on Inclusive Education (Qualify for PEI Additional Designation) cohort from July 8 to July 12, Monday to Friday, from 8:30am to 4:30pm.

 

Qualifications:
Successful candidates will normally have school-based experience in a Canadian public K-12 system.  For applicants without school-based experience, teaching in other contexts relevant and appropriate to the position will be considered. Where courses are offered on-line using multi-media technologies, applicants will normally be able to demonstrate successful on-line teaching experience.  Candidates who do not have previous online teaching experience must be open to and willing to do extra training for this delivery model, and without additional compensation.

In addition, candidates applying to teach graduate courses will normally have established expertise, and successful leadership and/or teaching experience in a context related to the foci of the cohort.

In all instances, qualified applicants on the UPEI Sessional Roster of the Faculty of Education will be given priority.
