The AVC Diagnostic Services (AVC DS) is seeking applications from qualified candidates to fill a Microbiology Research-Diagnostic Technologist Position in the Regional Diagnostic Virology Services (RDVS). The individual will work as part of a team in RDVS and AVC DS in the fine-tuning, validation and surveillance application of the new multiplex assay for swine enteric viral pathogens in connection with the collaborative project of AVC-UPEI and the Canadian Pork Council (CPC).

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Provides support and participates in the fine-tuning, enhancement, laboratory validation, diagnostic validation, standardization and surveillance application of the new multiplex assay that targets six  enteric viral pathogens of swine
• Performs multiplex molecular assays using fluidic bead-based technology and performs related diagnostic techniques such as PCR, RT-PCR, qRT-PCR and technologies related to sequencing
• Performs traditional diagnostic technologies such as ELISA, Fluorescent Antibody Test, microscopy, and cell culture
• Performs day to day tasks related to infectious agents and molecular diagnostic work such as aliquotting   primers and other diagnostic reagents, and recording inventory of these critical materials and other laboratory supplies
• Prepares, organizes, records, aliquots and stores diagnostic samples
• Documents procedures, results of experiments, and other tasks related to the fine tuning, development, standardization and application of the new multiplex assays and other molecular and traditional assays
• Prepares Standard Operating Procedures; Biosafety Applications; and other quality assurance and laboratory documentation

QUALIFICATIONS:

• The successful candidate must hold a Bachelor of Science, Master of Science or Medical Laboratory Technologist certification
• Experience in any of the following related disciplines : microbiology, biochemistry, immunology, virology or molecular biology
• Minimum two (2) years’ experience working in a veterinary microbiology diagnostic laboratory (virology, bacteriology and parasitology)
• Experience in a research or test development setting
• In-depth knowledge and hands-on experience in molecular diagnostic techniques, immunodiagnostic techniques, cell culture, and aseptic techniques
• Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
• Computer skills including those related to molecular biology (e.g. primer design)
• Strong people skills with the ability to work independently and as part of a team
