Metaliteracy and Student Engagement Librarian - Permanent Track Position

The University of Prince Edward Island invites applications for an innovative, energetic Academic Librarian, with an aptitude for information literacy instruction and a strong service orientation, to fill a permanent-track position.  This position is subject to budgetary approval.

The University of Prince Edward Island is one of Canada’s leading liberal undergraduate institutions. Located in Charlottetown, UPEI is a central educational, cultural and social institution in the City and the Province. With a population of over 4,000 part-time and full-time students, the University is best described as a research-intensive primarily undergraduate university, offering traditional programs as well as many unique areas of study, and has a strong research record in a number of areas.

Reporting to the University Librarian, the successful applicant will:

• Lead the development and coordination of the Library’s information literacy program, aligning it with the University’s strategic goals of becoming a leader in experiential learning, providing instruction that strengthens the relationship between research and teaching to foster curiosity, and creating a richer education for all students
• Collaborate with faculty and librarians to develop, plan, and coordinate the delivery of  traditional information literacy instruction and evolving digital literacies for first-year experience courses
• Provide leadership in developing and delivering metaliteracy-related e-learning opportunities
• Serve as a Liaison Librarian for specific departments with responsibilities including information literacy, delivering specialized information services, individual research consultations, and collection development
• Provide in-person and virtual reference service and coordinate communication and internal training for these services
• Participate in outreach activities, including monitoring and interfacing with regional, national and international information literacy initiatives
• Develop innovative approaches to engaging students in the Library context eg. collaborations with student campus groups, international students, and new student orientation events
• Work collaboratively to investigate and evaluate best practices in the development, implementation, and evaluation of the Library’s policies, goals, and procedures
• Perform supervisory duties


• An MLIS (or equivalent) from an ALA-accredited institution is required
• Recent professional experience in an academic library, including public service and instructional delivery
• Demonstrated skill in planning, developing, and delivering digital and information literacy instruction, including resources suitable for face to face, blended and/or online environments
• Familiarity with the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education and other information literacy frameworks, standards, and best practices
• Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, as well as demonstrated initiative and flexibility, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively
• Demonstrated commitment to professional practice that is evidence-based, consultative, and collegial
• Additional educational credential and experience related to adult learning, education, or instructional design would be an asset

The position is part of the UPEI Faculty Association Bargaining Unit #1, and is expected to be filled at the Rank of Librarian II.  The appointment will be effective July 1, 2017.  Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
