The Faculty of Education at the University of Prince Edward Island has openings for sessional instructors to teach the following courses in Summer 2019.

Please note that these courses include six hours of a pre-course reading/assignment, as well as 30 hours of face-to-face instruction.  Each of these courses will be co-taught with another instructor.  If you wish to co-submit with another person, please do so. Co-submission, however, is not required.

The instructors will be asked to work closely with the UPEI Academic Lead in preparation for the course.  This includes pre-course conference calls &/or orientation and a debriefing conference call at the end of the course. All course preparation will need to be completed two months before the start date of the course.  Depending on availability of flights and potential pre and post-course instructor meetings, the time spent physically present in the pertinent Nunavut community will include a few days before and after the course dates.

ED-5090 FOUNDATIONS OF TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERSHIP IN NUNAVUT EDUCATION (1 section)

This course reviews the history and world view of the Inuit, with particular emphasis on culture, educational history, struggles with power and privilege, beliefs, values, and principles relevant to Nunavut. Traditional and contemporary views on leadership are studied as participants develop a deeper understanding of the cultural context in which they live and work as educational leaders. Participants examine the directions and philosophies established in Nunavut, including ties to the environment and practices that facilitate transformational educational leadership.

This is a three-semester hour course offered in-person from June 29 to July 4, in Iqaluit, Nunavut, and will be offered in English.

ED-5110 PROACTIVE INSTRUCTIONAL LEADERSHIP IN NUNAVUT COMMUNITIES (2 sections)

The responsibilities, roles, and tasks of principals and other educational leaders are explored as they relate to the creation of a positive, inclusive, collaborative, and culturally responsive school community. The role of leadership in teaching and learning and building positive relationships, both in and outside school, is examined as a key factor in facilitating the academic achievement and well-being of learners. A variety of culturally appropriate facilitation strategies are introduced as participants analyze the legal, moral, ethical and policy rights of learners and educators in maintaining and strengthening culture and language and promoting success in schools, the local community, and the world beyond.

This is a three-semester hour course offered in-person from June 29 to July 4, 2019, in Iqaluit, Nunavut, and will be offered in English.

ED-5120 EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP: ENGAGING NUNAVUT PARENTS, ELDERS, AND COMMUNITY (2 sections)

This course focuses on the development of collaborative relationships, positive communication, and empowerment of parents, elders, and community members who lead, support, and guide education in Nunavut. Participants discuss approaches that respond to and involve the community, and build accountability in ways that are transparent and reciprocal. The involvement of the extended community in the daily life and long-term vision of the school provides a central focus as participants reflect on, and write about, the process of creating collaborative learning communities with parents, caregivers, and elders based on cultural values, beliefs, and principles.

This is a three-semester hour course offered in-person from July 6 to 11, 2019, in Iqaluit, Nunavut, and will be offered in English.

ED-5850 IMPROVING LANGUAGE AND LITERACY ACHIEVEMENT (2 sections)

This course looks at strategies teachers can employ to develop language and literacy skills in the students in their classrooms. Current research in this area is presented and critiqued.

This is a three-semester hour course offered in-person from July 6 to 11, 2019, in Iqaluit, Nunavut, and will be offered in English.

Qualifications:

Ideal candidates will have completed the Certificate in Educational Leadership in Nunavut (CELN) program or the Educational Leadership Program; possess recent, successful teaching and leadership experience within the K-12 system in Nunavut; and have experience speaking and teaching in Inuktut. An understanding of Inuit education and recent legislation, collective agreements, code of ethics and values, and policies and curricula guiding school programs in Nunavut is required.

Applicants will normally possess a graduate degree in education with a focus on Inuit educational leadership.  A high level of expertise related to the literature and scholarship in both action research and educational leadership in Nunavut, a comprehensive understanding of Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit as it is applied in light of recent educational legislation and policy in Nunavut, and the ability to teach comfortably in a bilingual (Inuktut/English) teaching environment with Inuit graduate students are required.

In all instances, qualified applicants on the UPEI Sessional Roster of the Faculty of Education will be given priority.

The offering of these courses is conditional on final enrolment numbers, and the dates and Nunavut locations are currently considered tentative. All sessional courses are subject to the final budgetary and administrative approval.
