The University of Prince Edward Island is looking for the right candidate to take on an exciting new permanent position of “Fabrication/Assembly Technician” in the School of Sustainable Design Engineering. Reporting to the Director of Student Experience, this individual would be responsible for: the management of the metal and wood fabrication shops, the student assembly area and the clinic project bays; providing technical advice and training to students in areas of prototyping, fabrication, manufacturing, assembly, testing, validation, data collection and safe working procedures and protocols; the coordination and supervision of senior student TA mentors; and the provision of technical advice and support to other technicians and activities. This individual would interact with students, academic staff and other technical and administrative staff on a daily basis.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Management of the metal and wood fabrication shops, the student assembly area and the clinic project bays
• Maintenance, operation and calibration of all fabrication equipment
• Maintenance of tools and equipment for student use
• Provide technical advice and training to students in areas pf prototyping, fabrication, manufacturing, assembly, testing, validation, and data collection
• Training and supervising students and others in the use of equipment and tools
• Coordination and supervision of senior student TA mentors including training and certification on the use of equipment and tools
• Provision of technical advice and support to other technicians and activities associated with the Centres of Excellence and the FabLab

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Two-year community college diploma in a relevant engineering technology field
• Minimum 2 years of relevant work experience
• Knowledge of and experience with manufacturing and assembly in both metal and wood materials, including the operation of industrial fabrication equipment such as milling machines, lathes, drill presses, shears, saws, etc.
• Knowledge of computer-aided design software and computer numerical control of machines
• Excellent communication and problem solving skills
• Demonstrated creative, communication, and organizational skills
• Ability to multi-task, coordinate projects and function professionally in a high-pressure, deadline-oriented environment
• Excellent computer skills
