The University of Prince Edward Island is the coordinating institution for a Major Collaborative Research Initiative funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. The 7-year project, titled Advancing Interdisciplinary Research in Singing (AIRS), is unfolding through the cooperation of some 70 researchers and various other stakeholders from a dozen different countries, and under the overall direction of Prof. Annabel Cohen, Department of Psychology, UPEI. Its primary objective is to facilitate and coordinate a variety of initiatives exploring the relationship between singing and three themes: development, education and well-being, all at both personal and social scales. The AIRS Project web-site is www.airsplace.ca.

Theme 1 of this project focuses on the Development of Singing.  One aspect of this study has entailed the use of the AIRS Test Battery of Singing Skills which includes components not only related to singing but also to verbal skills.

Student assistantship is required for the testing of participants whose first language is Mandarin, and the analysis of various items in the test battery results.  

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Recruitment of Mandarin Chinese speaking participants
• Scheduling and  testing of Mandarin language speakers
• Learning to use the Praat analysis program
• Conducting pitch analysis
• Story analysis, and possibly some statistical analysis
• Ethics proposal revisions, manuscript preparation, or literature reviews

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Applicants must be fluent in both Mandarin and English
• Ability to work responsibly without close supervision
• Good organizational skills
• Openness to the experience of other cultures
• Other assets include word processing, knowledge of computer music notation software (not essential), interest in music, singing, and or speech and language

Priority will be given to University of Prince Edward Island Students, currently registered in relevant disciplines of Psychology, but also possibly Music, Education, or other.  Priority to University of Prince Edward Island students in accordance with Recruitment, Selection, Hiring and Employment Policies and Procedures manual.
