The Veterinary Teaching Hospital requires an Animal Health Technician to work in the newly formed Dermatology Service. The service will operate 50% of the year, in which this person will be primarily involved. An additional 10% of the year will be dedicated to primary dermatology follow-up and client communication. The remaining 40% will be spent working in the small animal hospital in the various services including Small Animal Surgery, Small Animal ICU, Small Animal Medicine, Small Animal Anesthesia, Community Practice, Cardiology, and with various locum services.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under supervision of the Dermatologist, job responsibilities will include:

• Managing dermatology appointments, cases, and the dermatology areas
• Routine client communication regarding medication protocols, call backs, follow up (in person and on the phone)
• Completing treatment orders for any in hospital patients
• Administering sedation and preparing patients for intradermal testing, skin biopsies, and other dermatological procedures
• Monitoring patients while sedated or post-treatment, and reporting to the clinician any abnormalities in animals in relation to sedation or treatments
• Cleaning and sterilizing equipment, work areas, and maintaining biosecurity standards
• Viewing cytology and skin scraping findings under the microscope
• Discussing food trials with clients
• Demonstrating to clients how to clean ears, give subcutaneous injections, properly bathe an animal, and other duties with respect to client education
• Completing medical records with history
• Stocking and maintaining supplies in various locations
• Updating patient billing
• Performing necessary nursing skills for the various levels of care required within the VTH, including catheter placement, venipuncture, medication administration, etc.
• Support veterinary students, technician students, and junior veterinarians participating in post-graduate programs with confidence and compassion
• Work in a position of flux and change that may revolve around and through many services within the small animal hospital. Float responsibilities include: covering lunches, sick leave, vacation, etc. for other technicians in various areas and services within the SA hospital, and supporting busy services and locums with all related technical tasks
• Other related duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Must be a graduate of an Animal Health Technician program from a recognized facility
• RVT designation is required
• 3 plus years of experience working in a clinical setting with small animals
• Demonstrated ability to perform necessary nursing skills for the various levels of care required including sedation, monitoring, recovery, and basic treatments
• Demonstrated experience with basic microscopy and cytology
• Demonstrated interpersonal skills and professionalism with the ability to deal with conflict and frustration. Many dermatology clients experience profound frustration during the management of their animal's case and the individual needs to be able to be a cheerleader and champion to help keep them on track with treatment
• Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to explain basic dermatology concepts to clients (demonstrated experience in client communication)
• Demonstrated reliability, self-motivation, and a positive attitude
• Strong computer skills with demonstrated ability in Windows and iOS Operating Systems
• Demonstrated skills in multi-tasking, time-management, and adaptability
• Demonstrated ability to work well on a team
• Preference given to individuals with demonstrated experience in specialty referral or academic practice
• Preference given to individuals with previous specialty dermatology experience or with VTS specialization in Dermatology
