The University of Prince Edward Island invites applications for a position as a Research Manager in Marine Natural Products Chemistry beginning immediately.  This is a 12-month position renewable subject to grant funding and satisfactory review. 


The successful candidate will assist the principle investigator (R. Kerr) and work with two existing Research Managers on a variety of projects to discover and develop marine natural products with applications in human and animal health and wellness.  Specific duties will include, but are not limited to:
• Diving to collect marine samples in the Caribbean and throughout Atlantic Canada;
• Planning and execution of experiments designed to optimize the extraction and purification of natural products from invertebrates and microbial cultures; 
• Extraction and fractionation of natural products from cultures;
• Characterization of sample extracts by chromatography-mass spectrometry (UPLC/MS) and multi-dimensional NMR;
• Synthetic modifications of natural products to assess structure-activity relationships;
• Isolation of pure compounds from complex mixtures using modern medium pressure and high pressure chromatography.

This position may require domestic and international travel.  Irregular hours and weekend work will occur. The incumbent will be responsible for designing and implementing experiments and supervising students and technicians.  Excellent time management skills are required to ensure all activities are completed on schedule.


Candidates should hold at least a Ph.D. in marine natural products chemistry or a related field and have demonstrated prior supervisory experience.  The candidate must have experience in natural product discovery from marine macroorganisms and marine microbes working within a multidisciplinary environment, and should be a scientific diver.   Previous work experience should demonstrate superior organization and record-keeping skills.  Prior work in collaborative environments is a plus.  Knowledge of basic computer skills is also required.
