RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC) at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) is seeking a highly-qualified applicant for a research scientist position in agricultural/environmental economics. The focus of the position will be economic issues related to aquaculture and its sustainability. Aquaculture is an exciting new field and is the fastest growing food production activity in the world. The position is funded through the Canada Excellence Research Chair (CERC) in Aquatic Epidemiology awarded by the Canadian Government to UPEI. The goal of the CERC program is to make UPEI and Canada the global leader in applied aquatic epidemiology research (with an ecosystem health focus). The successful applicant will join a multi-disciplinary team of epidemiologists, statisticians, finfish, crustacean and mollusc clinicians, ecosystem health and regulatory veterinary medicine specialists whose work focuses on holistic approaches to assist the Canadian and international aquaculture industries improve their productivity, sustainability and health management.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The successful candidate must have a doctoral degree in economics, animal health economics, agricultural economics, environmental/resource economics, or public health economics, plus significant, relevant research experience. The successful candidate will also have an interest in applying these skills in the aquatic environment and to trade issues related to aquaculture and fisheries. Opportunities also exist to work with terrestrial livestock, pending funding which is currently being sought. Strong quantitative skills and experience with aquatic and terrestrial animal health issues and related economic issues will be considered assets. Individuals must be self-motivated and able to work both independently and as an effective partner in the growing UPEI CERC team.
