The Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC) seeks applications for a 3 month part-time term position as a research technician in the Department of Biomedical Sciences. The Department of Biomedical Sciences is primarily a research and teaching based department containing a broad base of Biomedical disciplines.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Reporting to the Chair of the Department, the successful applicant will be responsible for development of an on-line training program on the use of animals in research that will be accessed by all researchers on campus. The training program will follow the requirements of the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) and tailored to the specifics of animal care at UPEI and the AVC.

Duties will include:

Conducting visits to all animal care housing facilities and laboratories in the AVC on a weekly basis
Creating training modules using an on-line platform (Moodle)
Creating Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) on humane research methodologies
Performing welfare assessments on animals
Participation in the UPEI Animal Care Committee (ACC) meetings will be required 

QUALIFICATIONS:

The minimum qualifications for this position are:
• An undergraduate degree in biological sciences
• Minimum 2 years of experience working with a wide range of animals (rodents and avian species min.) in both academic and industry research settings
• Demonstrable knowledge of the CCAC and its guidelines
• Experience with assessing animal welfare and have evidence of experience in training others in animal methodologies and welfare assessment.
• A working knowledge of relevant computer software including Moodle, Word, and Adobe are also preferred
• Knowledge of, and good interpersonal relations within, the AVC/UPEI and the UPEI ACC are definite assets.
