The overall aim of the Department of Family and Nutritional Sciences is to provide a liberal university education which draws from a broad academic base: the biological, physical, and social sciences; humanities; and professional studies. The department offers three distinct programs in Foods and Nutrition, Family Science and Child and Family Studies.  The curriculum reflects current scientific knowledge in these disciplines which are concerned with improving the life conditions of families, individuals, and communities.

 

Bachelor of Science in Family Science

Family Science is an academic discipline that focuses on the family as both a unique small group within society and as an important part of larger society. It studies how people organize their family relationships as a consequence of the social forces that affect their interests, choices, and other behaviours.  more

 

Bachelor of Science in Foods & Nutrition

Nutrition is the science of foods and the nutrients they contain, and their actions within the body (digestion, transport, metabolism, and excretion). It studies the role of foods and nutrients in health, and the sociocultural and psychological factors that influence why we eat the way we do.  more

 

Bachelor of Child and Family Studies

This program is an articulated degree program.  Individuals who have completed a diploma in early childhood education at the community college level are eligible to apply for entrance.  Successful applicants enter UPEI as third year students.  more

 

Minor in Family Science or Foods and Nutrition

Students who are completing a major in another discipline may complete a minor in either Family Science or in Foods and Nutrition.  Please consult the UPEI Calendar for details.
