  • Prepare your application for a professional program, graduate studies or college

  • Review your cover letter or resumé for employment
  • Develop your job search skills
  • Improve your interview skills for employment
  • Explore other work integrated learning opportunities, such as volunteering, job shadowing, service learning, and networking

Ways to help you prepare for your appointment with a Career Counsellor:

  • Know that the goal of the career counsellor is to help you with a wide range of career related issues, however, it helps for you to have a starting point.
  • Try to do some homework before your appointment. For example, if you have a question about applying to a program, be sure to have invested some of your own time first to try and find the answer for yourself.
  • Arrive on time. Your appointment is for 50 minutes and if you arrive late that time is deducted from your 50 minute appointment. If you are more than 15 minutes late, you will have to reschedule your appointment.
  • Career counselling is a process, not a quick 50 minute fix. Plan to return and work collaboratively with your counsellor.
  • If you can no longer make your appointment, please take the time to email careerservices@upei.ca or call 902-566-0336 to cancel. Ideally, you would provide 24 hours notice to allow someone else the opportunity to fill the appointment time.

What to expect from your appointment with a Career Counsellor:

  • We will work with you to help relate your capabilities, interests, and skills to meaningful career options. Keep in mind this is a process and requires time and patience.
  • We will provide you with a safe, supportive and confidential environment.
  • In order to make progress, you will also have to be an active participant. We will explore possibilities, however, you will have to act on these to more forward.
  • While we have a breathe of career related knowledge, the career decision making process works much better if we help direct you to helpful career resources and then allow you to independently gather information you feel will be helpful for your career decision.
