BE THE CHANGE: Lacey Yeo, a graduate from the International Education program at UPEI, had her grade 5 students raise money and awareness for malaria nets.
In September 2009, Lacey Yeo and her grade 5 French Immersion class at Elm Street Elementary School, Summerside, decided to start collecting pennies to raise money and awareness for malaria nets. It was an amazing journey as the students began to learn more and more about the need to help others around the world. Lacey says, “Our motto for this project was ‘be the change.’ After completing the International Education program at U.P.E.I., I realized the need for humanitarian efforts. I wanted my students to understand the need in the world at a young age. I hope that they will go on to do their part to make the world a better place. This project has been successful.” Her students went on to raise $518 in 3 months. They saved the lives of 74 people who die needlessly every day in affected regions of the world. As the banner asks, “what did you do today?”
