With the growing demands of information technology, and the emphasis on lifelong learning, it is becoming increasingly urgent that we help students develop the critical skills needed to help them manage information. The Faculty of Education at UPEI is unique in its promotion and support of the outcomes, standards, and ideals for information literacy as articulated in the Atlantic Provinces Educational Foundation (APEF) Documents. It fosters the development of these ideals in pre-service teachers by providing resources and the services of a trained teacher-librarian to co-ordinate its Education Learning Commons (ELC).

The ELC's collection has an impressive selection of professional literature; Methodology texts in a variety of subject areas, specifically chosen for pre-service teachers, help them prepare lesson plans needed to address a variety of learning styles by developing resource-based learning assignments. <<< top of page
Finding Web Resources - Find a listing of websites, organized under the categories of Academic/Research Information, Information for Classroom Teachers, and Information for New Teachers.
A teacher preparation area, with access to space and materials to prepare assignments, is also part of what the ELC has to offer. A photocopier, a laminator, a book binder, an Elison Letter machine, a Paper Cutter, plenty of cutting-up materials for posters, and lots of markers and other supplies are kept on hand for student use.
A TV/ VCR and a CD Player are housed here for students to use in class presentations.
The ELC also has COMPUTER access. The coordinator is a trained teacher-librarian who is able to help students integrate technological resources more effectively into the designing of resource-based learning classroom assignments and projects. ELC models how a school library program in Prince Edward Island schools works. It uses the Dewey Decimal System and is coordinated by a trained teacher-librarian.
The Education Learning Commons is also pleased to introduce Smarteacher, a virtual library of learning resources for teachers. All sites have been previewed for content and applicability for curriculum use. <<< top of page
- Faculty Coordinator of the Education Learning Commons
- former high school English teacher
- Diploma in School Librarianship
- B.A. Honors in English (UPEI)
- B.Ed. (UPEI)
The coordinator’s position is half-time; 32 weeks from mid-August to mid-April.
Carolyn was a high school English teacher who, after a leave to co-parent six children with her husband Frank, enrolled in UPEI's Diploma in School Librarianship after a number of years of volunteering in school libraries. She believes that school library programs, managed by trained teacher-librarians, are the key to preparing students for the Information age. She welcomes the opportunity to help pre-service teachers develop strategies to, not only help their students become information and media literate, but more importantly, to become life-long learners. As a trained-teacher-librarian, she attempts to have the ELC model a school-library program, and to show how teachers and teacher-librarians collaborate to design and deliver resource-based learning projects to help students learn.
Carolyn would be pleased to welcome any queries you might have about the ELC and/or its resources. Please click here for a .pdf of the ELC's brochure.
