Prospective Students

Information for prospective students

If you are considering joining us here at the University of Prince Edward Island, you will want to have a look at some of the general information for prospective students which will give you information regarding our campus and our lifestyle.

Computer Science

Computer Science is the study of how computers, and the algorithms that drive them, are able to solve problems. Computer science students learn to build programs, the instruction sets that guide a computer's actions, starting from elementary tasks to complex portions of much larger projects.

An experience-based science, students "learn by doing" with interesting practical assignments.

For those who wish a fast-track to graduation, a standard 4-year curriculum is available. It is an excellent preparation for graduate studies. You can also opt for the 5-year co-operative education stream with the opportunity to gain paid experience in the field while completing your degree, giving you a financial head-start as well as valuable skills that will make you an attractive prospective employee after graduation (many graduates have secured employment via the co-op program prior to graduation).

Information Technology

We also offer a series of Information Technology courses, designed to add value to other degree options. With these courses, you deal less with the theoretical material that Computer Science students learn, focusing more on practical applications and hands-on experience.

Information technology offers students in other disciplines the opportunity to gain experience with the "inside view" of computer technology, and learn to appreciate how computers function in the context of their own discipline.

General

Our programs are complaint with the guidelines specified by the Computer Society of the Institute for Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE-CS) and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). These guidelines ensure the quality of accredited computer science degree programs.

We offer a Problem Solving Group for students who desire to excel, with intensive preparation for Programming Competitions, such as the annual APICS Programming Competition which pits the skill of UPEI programmers against those from around the Atlantic Provinces in a fun and friendly contest atmosphere.

We also employ students as research assistants in which they use their skills to write innovative research software, giving added experience and preparation for post-graduate studies and employment.
