An overview of our academic offerings
The UPEI Department of Computer Science and Information Technology offers programs designed to give students better understanding of computing technology. Whether you are looking to improve your current skills through a series of Information Technology courses or want to begin your journey to graduate studies through a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, we provide strong programs that will meet your needs.
The Bachelor of Science (BSc) with a major in Computer Science and the BSc Computer Science Honours programs are based on internationally recognized guidelines for undergraduate programs in computing from the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) and the Computer Society of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE-CS). The result is a program that provides instruction in areas of computing that are in demand by employers and also at the forefront of computing research. For those wanting to acquire a less theoretical understanding of computer technology to augment their studies or to upgrade current job skills, we offer courses with the Information Technology distinction. These courses focus on the practical aspects of computing without as much of the mathematical rigour associated with computing science.
All of the regular faculty members and instructors are located in one building. You will always find an open door to committed educators representing a variety of computing specialties. We take pride in communicating our theoretical knowledge and experience to you. Class sizes are small, permitting more individual attention. At UPEI, you can make computing your main area of study, or simply complement your chosen discipline with computing courses. Either way, you'll enrich your education and enhance your career potential. We believe our department is one of the best in Atlantic Canada, where you can create a foundation in computer science, and use technology to learn how to make a world of difference. We are confident that you will, too.
Computer Science Program
Computer Science introduces students to the science and principles that underlie all of computing. This stream is intended for students who want to understand better the principles and techniques used for mastering computer applications, and who intend to major in computer science with career goals in related areas. Logic and mathematics are key concepts in almost all courses, and we strongly recommend that all students complete their mathematical course requirements as early as possible in the program.
The Registrar's Office provides calendar information for the Computer Science program. In addition, we provide a graphical view of the Computer Science requirements for a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science.
Information Technology
This stream has two primary audiences: students in areas of study other than Computer Science, and current practitioners in the IT industry who may wish to enroll on a part-time basis to augment their skills. IT courses have a much smaller theoretical component than Computer Science courses, have less prerequisite requirements, and have a greater focus on current trends and technologies. The Registrar's Office maintains calendar information for this stream.
