Facilities

A brief overview of the equipment, software and lab environments available to our students.

Computer Science and Information Technology Resources

The Department of Computer Science and Information Technology runs its own laboratory featuring Linux and Windows-based workstations. This laboratory is fully equipped with 12 workstations, and includes a laser printer, and an application and file server which serves only this network. Through this system, students gain access and exposure to true multi-user operating systems and can program in a variety of languages, including Java, C++, Prolog, Scheme, and many others.  Our network resources are also available off-campus for those who like to work from home.

The CSIT lab, located in Cass 306, features Dell Optiplex systems running Linux (8 stations) and Windows XP Professional (4 stations).  These units are used in second-year and higher courses, and lab access is controlled by a keypad lock to permit easy yet secure student access after hours. This lab is not open to the general UPEI community - it is reserved for the use of CSIT students.

General UPEI Resources

The Department also makes use of the Kelley Microlab for the teaching of its introductory Computer Science courses, as well as its Information Technology offerings. This lab is managed by Computer Services, and provides 25 windows-based personal computers, as well as two laser printers, an overhead projector, and instructor workstation.

The Kelley Microlab is equipped with Dell Optiplex workstations running Windows XP Professional. This lab is open to all UPEI students, but is a teaching lab; as such, classes take priority and students must yield the lab to incoming classes during scheduled periods.

There is also a general-access laboratory on the second floor of the building, which is open to all UPEI students, which is available during normal building operating hours during the fall and winter semesters; it is not generally open during the summer months, or during extended holiday periods.
