Bruce Donaldson, coach of UPEI’s Women’s Hockey team, is pleased to announce Shaylin McFarlane has committed to the Panthers for the 2019–2020 season. McFarlane is a goalie from Douglastown and was a member of Team New Brunswick for the 2019 Canada Winter Games.

“I’ve been following Shaylin for a number of years—mainly through the Program of Excellence and the Atlantic Challenge Cup,” said Donaldson. “She has been with Team Atlantic for the past two years, played most recently with Rothesay Netherwood School, and represented New Brunswick at the Canada Winter Games earlier this year. Shaylin has great height, competes very well, and has a great technical skill set. She does a great job covering the net, tracking the puck, and moving post to post. We are looking forward to Shaylin joining our line-up come September.”

McFarlane’s sports career began with ringette when she was seven years old. She quickly switched to hockey, eventually finding her home between the pipes as a goalie.

“I’ve worked hard to have the opportunity to play hockey at the university level,” said McFarlane. “I consider playing for the UPEI Panthers an honour and a privilege. Coach Donaldson is a respected coach with a lot of experience in the AUS. His demeanour allowed me to feel comfortable throughout the process and made the decision easy for me. UPEI has a beautiful campus, and I always enjoy my time in Charlottetown when I visit. I started my journey in hockey as a goalie with the Miramichi Atom Panthers and becoming a Panther again is exciting and an opportunity that I'm grateful for.”

McFarlane has been accepted into UPEI’s Faculty of Arts.
