UPEI Security Services reminds the University community that the road that runs around the perimeter of campus is considered a provincial highway and is subject to the Highway Traffic Act. Of particular concern is that some roadway users are failing to stop at stop signs which are often adjacent to pedestrian crosswalks. Please come to a full stop at all stop signs to ensure both your safety and that of pedestrians. UPEI Security Police Officers patrol the Perimeter Road and may issue fines for traffic violations under the Highway Traffic Act, such as: using a cell phone while operating a vehicle, texting, not wearing a seatbelt, or speeding. Please keep our campus safe for everyone.

UPEI graduate students, faculty, and staff are invited to attend the annual Graduate Students' Association Social, hosted by the Graduate Students' Association on Monday, November 17 from 7:00-9:00 pm in McMillan Hall, W.A. Murphy Student Centre. There will be games, a photobooth, food and drinks, and a 50/50 draw. The annual faculty and staff awards will be announced during the event as well. The campus community is invited to a public presentation by Dr. Amy Hsiao, an associate professor in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Memorial University of Newfoundland. Amy’s presentation is entitled: “Industrial Application of Materials Selection, Characterization, and Testing.” Amy is a candidate for a tenure-track faculty position in the School of Engineering. The presentation is scheduled for Thursday, November 13 at 2:00 pm in Room 106 in the Health Sciences Building. Everyone is welcome.

UPEI’s Department of Student Affairs, the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, and the PEI Breast Cancer Information Partnership will introduce Breast Health 101 to the UPEI campus. This will be the first time that Breast Health 101 is offered on a Canadian university campus. Breast Health 101 will be offered by a pioneer in the development and implementation of the PEI Breast Screening Program on PEI, Norah Smith. Norah is the PEI Provincial Breast Screening Coordinator, represents PEI nationally on a number of boards, and has over 20 years of experience in breast health. UPEI faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to sign-up for a session. Sessions will be held on November 13, 14, and 20 from 12:15-1:00 pm in the Student Affairs boardroom. Join UPEI 103 students with their co-curricular project taking place on Wednesday, November 12 and Thursday, November 13, 9:30 am-12:30 pm in McMillan Hall, W.A. Murphy Student Centre. The students are setting up a "Swap for Supplies" yard-sale event to support second-year engineering students who are travelling to Mikinduri, Kenya in February to help support communities alongside the "Children of Hope" organization. Supplies needed include: pens, pencils, flashlights, bandaids, sealed pain medication (tylenol, aspirin, etc), and toothbrushes. Individuals who bring in supplies will have the opportunity to 'swap' their supplies for various gently-used items including books, clothing, decorations, etc. Don't have these supplies? Next in the AVC Community Workshop Series is "Dog Talk: What is your dog saying?" taking place onTuesday, November 18 from 7:00-8:30 pm, in AVC Lecture Theatre A. People and dogs are excellent observers of body language and both use extensive nonverbal communication. But the two languages are very different and not always understood by each other. Dr. Anne Marie Carey, Department of Companion Animals, AVC, will discuss the basics of dog language to help communicate effectively with our canine companions. She will present some common situations and interpret them from both the dog's and owner's point of view. Dr. Carey will also provide insight into safe interaction between dogs and children.
