Join Dr. Carolyn Peach Brown and Dr. Donald Wagner for the first set of presentations in the series, on Monday, February 2 at 11:30 am in the Faculty Lounge, SDU Main Building. Dr. Peach Brown’s presentation is titled “Forests, People and Development in Cameroon,” and will discuss the role of local institutions and community forest management in the Congo Basin forest of Cameroon. Dr. Wagner’s presentation is titled “Microfinance in Uganda and South Africa,” and will explore how microfinance is used as an economic development tool in Uganda and South Africa. The Dr. Frances Gray Music Performance Competition 2015 Finals concert will be held Thursday, January 22 at the Dr. Steel Recital Hall, at 7:30 pm. This annual competition was recently renamed in honour of Dr. Gray’s retirement from the UPEI Music Department. The six students chosen from the preliminary round to perform in the finals are: Rebecca Apps, soprano; Jillian Clow, mezzo soprano; Leah Inman, piano; Lucas MacPhail, alto saxophone; Kailey Norris, clarinet and Hannah Rollwage, mezzo soprano. Judges for the competition are well-known PEI musicians and educators: Reg Ballagh, Peter Bevan Baker, Ken Fornetran, Karen Graves and Anne White. UPEI will be celebrating its fourteenth annual International Development Week (IDW), February 2-6, 2015. IDW is a national event held each year to increase awareness of Canada’s role in international development. The events also serve to educate the general public on life in developing countries. The 2015 theme of this year’s week is “We Make a Difference,” and will include events such as: brown bag lunch series, an international coffee house, international trivia and “Desserts and a Difference” featuring a keynote presentation from Dr. Timothy Goddard.
