Under the direction of Sung Ha Shin-Bouey, the UPEI Concert Choir will perform selections from Rossini's Petite Messe Solennelle featuring UPEI vocal majors as soloists. Along with the Concert Choir, the recital includes the UPEI Chamber Singers, Le Ragazze Girls Vocal Ensemble and I Ragazzi Juniors Children's Chamber Choir and will feature renaissance, folk, and pop styles. This award was created in honour of Dr. J. Regis Duffy; it is awarded to a graduating UPEI student who has demonstrated to an outstanding degree the qualities of scholarship and leadership within the University community, and who is not receiving a Governor General's Medal. A cash prize of $1,000 and medallion will be granted to the successful student recipient. Nominations can be made by any member of the University community on behalf of a student. Letters of recommendation on how the student meets the criteria of the award can be forwarded to the Scholarships and Awards Office in the Registrar’s Office by mail or email at scholarships@upei.ca. For anyone interested in learning the different ways to multiply—parents, students, teachers, pre-service teachers, and friends! 4:30–6:00 pm Thursday, April 9 Health Sciences Building, Room 104 The workshop will start with the basics by drawing pictures to model multiplication. Then, we will move to contrasting the different ways to multiply and strategies for multiplication. The workshop will focus on multiplication of decimal numbers too! Workplace stress can be triggered by many sources: heavy workloads with tight timelines, layoffs or restructuring, or difficult co-workers. When combined with the pressures and responsibilities outside of work, it is no wonder that people experience high levels of stress. This session will help people to: -Define stress and the fight or flight response. -Identify personal stressors and symptoms. -Develop strategies to increase their personal resiliency. Dr. Heather Gunn McQuillan, Director of the AVC Veterinary Teaching Hospital, is pleased to announce that UPEI staff and AVC student appreciation discounts on products within the Veterinary Teaching Hospital are being re-implemented to recognize the dedication of students and employees. The first discount program being launched is for pet food products, beginning on May 1, 2015. The discount is on stocked and special order foods and will be applied at the time of payment by front desk staff who ask for understanding and patience as applying discounts can take time to process. If people could be conscious of the fact that non-staff/non-student clients are paying full price and to allow them to be served first, that would be greatly appreciated. VTH PET FOOD DISCOUNT POLICY 1. Starting May 1, 2015 the Veterinary Teaching Hospital will extend a professional courtesy to the faculty and staff of UPEI and to the students of the AVC by way of a discount on pet food sold in the VTH. i. All in-stock pet food will be discounted to a rate of cost plus 10%. ii. Special order-BULK: A special bulk order on pet foods will be available in addition to the regularly stocked foods. These will be scheduled orders (1-2 times per month) and must be pre-paid. These will be billed at a price of cost plus 10%. Any Royal Canin or Hills Science Diet dog or cat food available through CDMV can be ordered through this special ordering process including “in-clinic” bags of food. Gina Mortimer will be organizing these orders and will be in contact in the near future with how this process will occur. iii. Special orders outside of the scheduled bulk orders for prescription diets not routinely kept on the shelf can also be done with pre-payment, and will be ordered once minimum order targets are met (typically weekly).These will be billed at a price of cost plus 10%, so long as they are prepaid. Special orders that are not pre-paid are ineligible for discounting. iv. Proof of identification- In order to be eligible for the discount, individuals must identify if they are a student, staff, or faculty member. For students, they must give their AVC class year. For staff and faculty, they must provide their departmental address and/or show proof of UPEI staff status by being a current member in the UPEI online directory.

The campus community is invited to a public presentation by Dr. Ali Bonakdar, entitled “Challenges in Advanced Manufacturing Process Simulation with Application in Gas Turbine Engine”. Dr. Bonakdar is currently a Senior Gas Turbine Manufacturing Engineering Specialist at Siemens Canada and an Adjunct Professor at Concordia University. He is a candidate for a tenure-track faculty position in the School of Sustainable Design Engineering. The presentation will take place Friday, April 10 at 2:45 pm in the Alex H. These skills involve verbal and non-verbal behaviours as well as the ability to speak with persuasion and confidence. This session will look at both sides of the communication equation. This session offers helpful strategies to: · Develop techniques to communicate assertively. · Speak effectively when conversing about conflict. · Recognize the barriers that can get in the way of listening. Dr. Truis Smith-Palmer, Department of Chemistry, St. Francis Xavier University will present a seminar on Wednesday, April 8, 2015 at 12:30 pm. Dr. Smith-Palmer’s presentation is entitled "Towards antifouling solutions: Raman studies of bacterial biofilms, and Surfactants which inhibit the settling or development of tunicate larvae." The seminar will be held in the Regis and Joan Duffy Research Centre, Lecture Theatre, Room 212.

Dr. Kathleen MacMillan, Ambulatory Equine Service, Atlantic Veterinary College at UPEI, will give a community workshop titled “The Truths and Myths of Equine Animal Welfare” on Tuesday, April 14, at 7 pm, in Lecture Theatre A. She will present the guidelines for minimum standards of care for the welfare of the horse, including proper nutrition, appropriate shelter, disease prevention and treatment, humane handling, and when necessary, end of life decisions and humane euthanasia. She will also provide information about recognizing signs for concern, such as how to score a horse’s body condition and what individuals can do if they suspect a horse is in distress and at risk. NOTE: There is a change of location for this session, it will now take place in the Health Sciences Building, Room 105 on April 8 from 3:30-5:00 pm. The academic planning process is meant to build on the reflection, wayfinding, and planning that began with the work done on the UPEI Strategic Plan. The Academic Planning Group is currently in its fifth month of work since being created by Senate. We are currently still collecting data through public consultation and reviews being conducted by programs on campus. We expect to present our plan to Senate for the first Senate Meeting of the 2015-2016 academic year in September 2015. The Academic Plan that is shaping up from our analysis of the data and from our deliberations is both about setting goals for our institution and about taking a practical look at the work that needs to be done to make UPEI an even better place to live and learn. We used the directions listed in the strategic plan as our starting point and will be using our various feedback mechanisms to contextualize those directions and uncover new and interesting directions for our university. In the coming months, we encourage you to participate in the academic planning process, both during formal events and through direct communication with any of the members of the committee. Each item of feedback will be considered in the development of the Academic Plan. We are working towards a plan that we can use to help shape our future directions and make real immediate change to our University. During these consultations, we will consider some of the more complex elements and shape the document accordingly.
