Funding Available for Private Sector Employers

The UPEI Co-operative Education Program is inviting PEI employers in private sector businesses to hire talented Co-op students who are available for 12-16 week work terms.  These work terms run during the January - April , May-August, and September-December periods.  Students are available from the Business, Computer Science and Physics Co-op programs.  “Our students are highly motivated, bright,  hard working and possess many of the valuable skills needed in today’s workforce.  These students are serious about their education and are keen to contribute to the success of any business or organization,” says Ernie Doiron, Coordinator of UPEI’s Business Co-op Program.

Wage incentives are available for private sector businesses on PEI.  Businesses can receive 50 % of the student’s hourly wage, up to a maximum contribution of $9.00 per hour. Assistance is offered based on opportunity for student learning and availablity of funding.

Organizational Eligibility:

To be eligible, organizations must:

  1. Be located on Prince Edward Island
  2. Be a private sector company
  3. Provide a minimum pay rate of $12 per hour
  4. Provide meaningful work experience by enhancing students' career skills
  5. Commit to providing mentorship and supervision
  6. Provide learning and training opportunities for students
  7. Offer placements that contribute to the future employability of students
  8. Submit a job description outlining student duties. Description must be approved by UPEI Co-op
  9. Submit a Private Sector Co-op Development Application Form for approval                                                                                                                                                                                                          

Student Eligibility:

  1. Participation will be limited to eligible full time students enrolled in the UPEI Co-operative Education Program.
  2. Students must be eligible to work in Canada.
  3. Students must be a full-time student and be returning to university in full-time studies following their work term.

Terms:

  1. Approved organizations are eligible to receive a wage incentive of 50% of the student's hourly wage rate, to a maximum of $9.00 per hour (depending on available funding), for a maximum of 37.5 hours per week for a period of 12 - 16 weeks. Wage incentives do not include Mandatory Employer Related Costs.
  2. Eligible employers are requierd to complete a Private Sector Co-op Development Program 'Claim Form' upon completion of the students work term, to receive approved wage incentive.

Application Process:

  1. Fully complete and submit the Private Sector Development Application Form to the Co-op Office.
  2. Visit www.upei.ca/co-op/hire-a-student-0, complete the "Post a Job" form.
