201 CLASSICAL ATHENS
This course gives detailed consideration to the political, military, social and economic history of Athens from the end of the Persian Wars to the execution of Socrates. Particular attention is given to the literary and documentary sources, especially Thucydides' History of the Peloponnesian War.
PREREQUISITE: Classics 101, or 121, or permission of the instructor.

301 THE HOMERIC EPICS
This course gives detailed consideration to the lliad and the Odyssey and pays particular attention to the origin and development of those ideas which formed the basis of the Greeks' understanding of their own culture.

302 VIRGIL, FATHER OF THE WEST
This course is based on the reading of all the major works of Virgil. It assesses his significance for the development of Western thought and literature.
PREREQUISITE: Classics 102, or 121, or 301, or permission of the instructor.

This course provides a further study of grammar and syntax and readings from prose authors.

This course provides a study of grammar and more advanced syntax and readings from a verse author.

LATIN 201
This course includes composition of continuous Latin prose and a detailed study of a prose author, such as Cicero or Livy.
PREREQUISITE: Latin 102
Three hours a week.
LATIN 202
This course includes composition of continuous Latin prose and the study of verse authors such as Horace and Virgil.
