Welcome to the University of Prince Edward Island

We are truly delighted to welcome you to our beautiful UPEI campus for Week Two of the 2009 Canada Games. Below, we’ve provided a few ideas about our University to pique your interest. To learn more about UPEI’s exciting programs, go to upei.ca or call 902.566.0488.

PRIDE’S NOT A SIN AT UPEI

Our mascot, Pride the Panther, has lots to roar about—UPEI, with just over 4200 students, boasts sports and athletics facilities that are the envy of Atlantic Canada. They include everything from a lighted synthetic turf field, to two NHL-size ice surfaces, to a 25-metre competition pool, to a super-spacious, top-of-the-line fitness centre.

And now, our brand new athletics facility, purpose-built for Canada Games, is providing the impetus to develop a community-based athletics program across PEI.  For info on how UPEI plays a key role in sports and wellness initiatives in PEI, contact Ron Annear at 902.566.0715 or annear@upei.ca.

SMALL ISLAND, BIG RESEARCH

Our students and faculty are involved in cutting-edge research every day. It’s no wonder we’re ranked number one in research growth among Canadian undergrad universities. Ten years ago, we received just under $3 million in research grants and contracts; last year, that figure soared to more than $16 million. We’re finding ways to detect and fight cancer using light and sound, discovering how singing could improve your health and well-being, and exploring sustainable methods of deriving bioactive compounds from coral. For more of our stories, visit upei.ca/research, or contact Dave Atkinson at 902.620.5117 or datkinson@upei.ca.

HEART AND SOUL OF VETERINARY MEDICINE

The Atlantic Veterinary College at UPEI is known around the world for its outstanding education, research and service programs. We train our veterinary professionals for a life of dedication, discovery and service that is played out along a journey that continuously intersects animal health, public health and our environment.

We’re advancing veterinary health care. Helping to make food safer. Tracking diseases to reduce risks to animals and the public. Making populations healthier. Safeguarding wildlife. We’re making differences that impact our communities and society every day. To learn more about the heart and soul of veterinary medicine, visit us while you’re on campus, contact Charlotte McCardle at cmccardle@upei.ca or 902.566.0533, or go to upei.ca/avc.
