2009 Canada GamesWHAT: Canada Games, a multi-sport and cultural event, is coming to Prince Edward Island August 15–29. The Games bring together the best athletes and artists in a specified age group from each Canadian province and territory. Venues are all across the Island, with UPEI hosting some of the major events.
WHEN: Week One, August 15–22, based in Summerside; Week Two, August 23–29, based at UPEI
WHERE AT UPEI: CARI pool for swimming; Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre for volleyball; new UPEI Alumni Canada Games Place for Athletics and Closing Ceremonies; the soccer fields for soccer; UPEI residences for the Athletes' Village. CARI will host 1-,3-, and 3- metre synchronized diving events during Week One.
WHO: 4,500 participants from all across Canada, divided between the two weeks (2,200 on campus). The Games are organized by the Prince Edward Island 2009 Canada Games Host Society, an incorporated not-for-profit organization, in co-operation with the national body, the Canada Games Council.
WHY: The Canada Games have been hosted every second year in every province and territory since 1967. Prince Edward Island hosted the Winter Games in 1991; this is our FIRST time for the Summer Games.
