A snowy owl is flying free again, thanks to the excellent care it received this spring at AVC. The owl was found near Summerside, PEI, about a month ago, unable to fly or feed herself. She was taken to AVC where she received treatment and care until she regained her strength and ability to fly. After being banded, the owl was released back to the wild on June 8 by Dr. Alice Crook, coordinator of the Sir James Dunn Animal Animal Welfare Centre (SJDAWC). The SJDAWC provides funding for the rehabilitation and release of wildlife and marine mammals. Involved in the owl’s recovery and release were Dr. Marion Desmarchelier, AVC’s new Assistant Professor in Zoo, Exotic Animals and Wildlife Medicine; DVM students Kelly DeHaan and Mark Houle; and Ben Hoteling and Dwayne Oakley, of Holland College’s wildlife conservation technology program.
