The UPEI Panthers continue winning way be defeating UdeM 1-0 on Saturday during the Celebrate UPEI weekend.
A less than sharp UPEI side scored midway through the 1st half. Maria Scichilone finished off an excellent Cheslie McInnis cross in the 22nd minute, placing the ball low into the Moncton net to the keepers right. The play was started by defender Andrea Archibald’s well placed ball between the U de M fullbacks, allowing McInnis to run onto the ball in uncontested space.
U de M enjoyed a slight territorial advantage in the opening half, with their best chance being a ball headed over the Panther net in the 8th minute. Their remaining chances came from free kicks and corners. UPEI held a significant edge in play in the 2nd half, however could not capitalize on the opportunities presented. The Panthers struggled all day with the Moncton off side trap, constantly having their strikers caught behind the defenders before the ball was played through. A confident Moncton keeper consistently picked up balls inside the 18 yard box as UPEI failed to play the ball wide behind the Moncton backline.
The Panthers had the edge in shots (9-5), chances (18-12) and corners (7-3).
