The 8th ranked UPEI Women’s Panthers soccer team rolled to a convincing 4-0 win over the Mt Allison Mounties Sunday afternoon in Sackville. Rookies Alex Shinnan and Emilie Pelletier, with two ,had the unbeaten Panthers(3-0-0) in control by halftime.
Shinnan scored off a corner in the games 8th minute, volleying the ball over the Mountie keepers outstretched arms. Pelletier looked like a natural scorer in beating a defender to the ball before calmly walking around a helpless keeper in the 23rd minute, and again in the 41st minute, effortlessly pushing a soft shot along the ground into the back of the Mounties net to the keeper’s left.
Pelletier missed a natural hat trick in the opening minute of the 2nd half as the Mountie keeper, the busiest player on the pitch, made a save as Pelletier was in alone.
Andrea Yd Gustavdorthir closed out the scoring in the 63rd minute, hitting a rocket from the far right side of the field just inside the left post. It was the Iceland native’s 2nd highlight goal this season as she hit the ball as well as any ball has been hit in Mike Redmond’s 8 seasons as coach.
UPEI controlled the game, which was not as close as the score might indicate. Mt.A recorded only 1 shot on goal, in the 85th minute. Keeper Channelle Roy was equal to the occasion, making a fine save on a point blank shot. UPEI had the edge in shots (11-1), chances(17-1) and corners(6-0). Liberal substitutions and the narrow grass field which showed the effects a football game on Saturday were contributing factors in keeping the score respectable. “Contributions from everyone” noted Redmond. “Now, we go home for a tough weekend series”
The Panthers have their home openers this Saturday, hosting U de M at 6:00 p.m. and then play St.FX on Sunday at 1:00.
