Goals from Chelsie McIinnis, Maria Scichilone and Danae Iatrou powered the 1st place UPEI Panthers (11-1-1) to a comfortable 3-0 victory over Mt. A. (1-8-4) Monday evening in Charlottetown as the AUS regular season came to an end.
McInnis, in her final home game, opened the scoring in the 18th minute using a near post run to finish a close in cross from Andrea Yr Gustavsdottir in a somewhat uninspiring half. The Mounties were playing out their season while UPEI has their sights set on this weekend’s playoffs in Fredericton.
UPEI were much better in the 2nd half, putting the game away half with goals less than 2 minutes apart. Scichilone ran onto a ball placed by behind the Mt A defenders by Meaghan Malcolm and calmly placed a shot high inside the far post in the 66th minute to register a goal in her 3rd consecutive game.
She then set up Iatrou’s 1st AUS goal on a cross from the right side as Iatrou left footed the ball past a helpless Robin Bessemer in the Mountie net.
UPEI was seldom in fear of conceding a goal, outshooting Mt A 15-2, out chancing them 20-3 and having a 6-3 edge in corners. The Panthers substituted freely during the game, using all 18 players. Alex Shinnan got her 1st start at centre back and keeper Kirsten Visser saw her 1st game action as UPEI recorded their 10th shutout of the season and a school record 11th victory.
“It’s a good tune up for the playoffs” stated coach Mike Redmond. “Several good practices and we should be ready for Saturday.”
UPEI and St Mary’s have a bye into Saturdays’ semi finals in Fredericton with the Panthers playing the lowest surviving seed from Friday’s quarter finals.
