The Acadia Axewomen helped the UPEI Panthers achieve a 2-2 draw in AUS women’s soccer action Friday in Halifax.
UPEI’s Sara Stewart was credited with a goal that was knocked in by an Acadia player for the tying marker.
UPEI was up 1-0 at half on a goal by Maria Scichilone on a pass from Jenna MacDonald in the 22nd minute.
Acadia tied it in the 57th minute on a goal by Rebecca Slaunwhite and went ahead late in the half on a 25-yard free kick from Jenna Blackburn on a breakdown in the Panther defence which didn’t have her marked.
UPEI tied the game with about eight minutes left on an own goal.
Acadia headed it into their own net. UPEI had a free kick from 35 yards out and when an Acadia defender went to clear it away, she instead knocked it into her own net. Stewart was given the goal.
If the Panthers win their final home game Sunday (1 p.m.) against Mount Allison they’ll clinch first place.
“I was disappointed on the two goals we gave away. It’s something to build on going into Sunday,’’ UPEI head coach Mike Redmond said.
