Chelsie McInnis provided the lone goal for the UPEI women as they edged the U de Moncton 1-0 on Sunday afternoon. The Panthers (8-1-0) enjoyed a significant edge in play over the cellar dwelling Aigles Bleu(0-8-1), however continued a season long habit of wasting numerous quality scoring chances.
McInnis ran unto a pass from Sara Stewart in the 69th minute, outmuscled the Moncton right back before placing a great shot over an adventurous Edny Limage and inside the far post.
Similar to their ‘s teams loss to UNB on Saturday, Panther supporters witnessed should be goals sail high and wide of the net or hit directly into a waiting Limage.
Meaghan Malcolm, in her first start as a defender, was in all alone in the 43rd minute only to send a shot well over the net. In the 45th minute, Stewart missed the net from an indirect kick just 11 yards from goal. McIinnis had a couple of quality chances prior to connecting, none better than when she drilled a ball into Limage’s hands from close range in the 62nd minute.
Moncton’s best chance came in the 40th minute when a well hit ball from 40 plus yard grazed the crossbar.
UPEI had the advantage in shots(10-3), chances(18-6) and corners(5-1). They did struggle with Moncton’s offside trap, being called 6 times.
The game was the 100th regular season match for coaches Mike Redmond and Clarence Frizzell, who have won or tied 84 of the games.
UPEI played without three regulars, two of whom are done for the season. Defenders Kim Brown and Allyson Seviour have season ending leg injuries while Andrea Yr Gustavsdottir was forced to sit out after suffering a leg injury on Saturday. The Panthers substituted freely on the afternoon, having as many as 6 rookies on the field together. Malcolm acquitted herself quite well in an unfamiliar role, defending well and effectively joining the attack.
The Panthers are at home this weekend to Memorial and Acadia.
