Kinza Baker, with her 2nd goal in as many days, and Rachel Graham scored in
the first half as the Women Panthers left Fredericton with a decisive 2-0
victory on Saturday evening.
"Full credit to the players" commented coach Mike Redmond. " The work rate
was high, they were organized and they outplayed a fresh team while it was
our 2nd game in 24 hours".
Except for about 15 minutes in the 2nd half the young Varisity Reds were not
a match for the Panthers. The Panthers dominated the first 45 minutes , not
allowing UNB any shots or chances at keeper Channelle Roy. Panther strikers,
led by player of the game Chelsie McInnis, applied consistent pressure on
the UNB backline. It was McInnis' best game as a Panther as she completely
wore out the right side of the UNB defense.
Baker opened the scoring in the 16th minute finishing off a three way play
with McInnis and Tessa Roche by calmly placing the ball into the lower left
hand corner of the net.
Graham found the back of the net in the 36th minute, finishing off a play
that covered 85 yards. She ran down a great long ball from Gina Lisi, workd
a give and go with Roche and brought the Panther bench to its feet with a
great finish.
McInnis,Roche, Baker and Graham (goal post) all had excellent opportunities
in the 2nd half as they were clearly quicker than the opposition. UPEI's
midfield and backline were very effective in turning the ball over to the
strikers throughout the match. UNB's best chance was a screaming 35 yard
free kick off the foot of Maura Carter that struck the crossbar in the 54th
minute.
The Panthers outshot UNB 10-4 and outchanced them 12-3
With the victory the Panthers have started a season with 2 wins for the
first time since coaches Redmond and Clarence Frizzell arrived in 2004. The
perfect start will get a solid test this Saturday afternoon as the always
tough St. FX women come to Town.
