Panthers look to remain perfect

The 6th ranked UPEI Women Soccer Panthers(5-0-0) continue their 2011 season with a pair of games at home this weekend. The Panthers host UNB (2-3-1) on Saturday at 1:00pm before battling defending champion Cape Breton (3-2-0) Sunday at 1:00pm.

“Excited” is how senior Cheslsie McInnis described the mindset as she awaits the weekend games .”It’s been a good start, we have a good passing team” noted McInnis, who is leading the league with two game winning goals.

UPEI is facing a UNB team fresh off two wins at home last weekend while scoring nine goals. UNB’s Samantha Lagacy is tied for the league lead in goals with five . Hosts to this season’s playoffs, UNB is eager to prove they belong with the elite teams in the AUS. A result against the Panthers would go a  long way in separating the Reds from the lower echelon of the league.

Cape Breton enters this weekend on a rare two game losing skid.  League champions six of the last eight seasons the Capers know how to improve as the season rolls along. After a 1-3 start to the 2010 season the Capers went on a 12 game unbeaten run, including 3 wins in less than 48 hours, to knock off the previously undefeated Panthers in the championship game.

UPEI is looking to extend its 1st place lead, but more importantly they are hoping to improve areas of their game. “Our set pieces are not where they need to be”, commented coach Mike Redmond.”Both of these teams can score, we need to capitalize on our opportunities.”
