Women's Soccer

The 7th ranked UPEI Womens’ soccer Panthers are intent on strengthening their grip hold on 1st place this weekend as they host MUN(2-4-3) and Acadia(0-6-3) on Saturday and Sunday at 1:00 pm.

OTTAWA (CIS) – The reigning national champions are ranked No. 1 in the first CIS hockey and volleyball polls of the 2011-12 season.
In women’s hockey, the McGill Martlets, who are led for a fifth and final campaign by two-time Olympic gold medallist goaltender Charline Labonté, are off to a 3-0 start in conference play. McGill captured a third CIS title in four years last winter thanks to a 5-2 gold-medal win over St. Francis Xavier.

Chelsie McInnis provided the lone goal for the UPEI women as they edged the U de Moncton 1-0 on Sunday afternoon. The Panthers (8-1-0) enjoyed a significant edge in play over the cellar dwelling Aigles Bleu(0-8-1), however continued a season long habit of wasting numerous quality scoring chances.

Brianna Ford scored both goals on UNB’s only shots of the game as the Reds ended any thoughts UPEI had for an undefeated season. Ford opened the scoring in the 18th minute on a longshot that dropped into the net after being deflected off the crossbar by Panther keeper Channelle Roy.

Bolstered by the highest national ranking(number 4) in team history the UPEI Women’s Soccer Panthers are eager to build on some impressive streaks as they enter the 2nd half of the 2011 season. The 1st place Panthers(7-0-0) are on the road to face UNB(2-4-2) and Universite de Moncton(0-6-1) this Saturday and Sunday.

The UPEI women's soccer team made a move again this week to 4th and the women's rugby team remained in the standings at 10th.  Both teams are back in action this weekend with the soccer teams at UNB on Saturday and Sunday at UdeM, both days game times are 1:00 pm and 3:15 pm.

Striker Chelsie McInnis with the CIS No. 5-ranked UPEI Panthers women’s soccer team is the Atlantic University Sport Subway Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending October 2nd, 2011. McInnis, a fifth year Business Administration student from Summerside, P.E.I., scored a pair of goals two UPEI home wins this past weekend over UNB and Cape Breton.

The red hot UPEI Womens Panthers extended their perfect season Sunday afternoon with a 3-0 victory over defending AUS champions Cape Breton Capers. UPEI(7-0-0) started quickly against CBU(4-3) being in alone on the Caper keeper 30 seconds into the match and again, 2 minutes later. A fine save on the 1st chance and a missed open net on the 2nd allowed the Capers to escape, at least temporarily.

UPEI extended their winning streak to six games on Saturday afternoon with a rain soaked 1-0 victory over the UNB Reds. Emilie Pelletier redirected a perfect cross from Cheslie McInnis in the 49th minute for her third goal of the season. It was the Panthers third consecutive 1-0 win.

The 6th ranked UPEI Women Soccer Panthers(5-0-0) continue their 2011 season with a pair of games at home this weekend. The Panthers host UNB (2-3-1) on Saturday at 1:00pm before battling defending champion Cape Breton (3-2-0) Sunday at 1:00pm.
