Sunday afternoon the Saint Mary Huskies took the second of the double header winning 63-51over the UPEI Panthers.
“We knew we were in tough against a pretty solid Saint Mary’s team,” said UPEI coach Carly Clarke. “(Canvin and Colley) are potentially first-team all-stars or league MVPs. They both had good weekends, which was tough for us. They provide tough matchups for us.”
UPEI led 31-28 at the half but came apart in the second, turning over the ball and allowing the Huskies to hit some uncontested three-pointers.
Some high-pressure defence in the final minutes helped the Panthers cut the lead, but it was too little, too late.
Second-year guard Jenna Jones led the Panthers with 12 points and was named UPEI’s player of the game.
“We definitely learned a lot this weekend,” the 19-year-old said post-game. “We can beat them. We know we can.”
Amy Gough was limited to just four points, but led the Panthers in rebounds with six and had two steals.
Laura Power had eight points, four rebounds and a block in just 15 minutes of play.
Clarke said her team is still learning how to win.
“We’re still a young team,” she said. “We have individuals that know how to win, but as a team, they’re still figuring that out.”
She said leadership, high energy, and the ability to stop opponents from going on runs will be keys going forward.
